The Mustard Seed

The Mustard Seed

Greetings Friends of St. Bakhita Catholic Worker,

One of my favorite Gospel accounts was proclaimed this past Sunday at Catholic Masses throughout the world. It involves the parable of the mustard seed. I love the idea of beautiful things growing out of small beginnings. Gaining two new members in our community this month made this idea spring to life in such a visceral and tangible way. Getting to know them has been such a privilege and it is my hope that, in time, their lives will open up to a myriad of possibilities! Small start, large outcomes!!

Another way this imagery comes alive at St. Bakhita House is through the steady and patient work of many loyal and hardworking volunteers. It is past time that we pay special tribute to Todd and Molly Jordan , who have been faithfully coming here for over a year now. Painting, hauling, cleaning, organizing, repairing . . .you name the arduous work, and they have graced our home with it. I am in awe of how consistent and steady efforts have added up to huge and beautiful transformations. And I cannot forget the incredible generosity of time, talent (and delicious bakery) offered by Mary Pat Jordan! This family is the quintessential mustard seed in the vineyard of the Lord. And add to that the efforts of their fellow volunteer and friend Mike Jorasz and we are beyond blessed!!

Finally, we would like to invite you to consider another mustard seed opportunity. We will be holding a nine-month “Dorothy Day Deep Dive” entitled Dorothy Day—Patron Saint of Both/And. It will involve a cohort group of up to 18 people who will gather once a month, for eight months, learning about Dorothy and the Catholic Worker Movement. It is designed for those who have already read The Long Loneliness and want to take a deeper historical dive into the theological, intellectual, historical, and spiritual roots of the Catholic Worker. Details for signing up for this journey will be in next month’s update. The first 18 to register will be the first of hopefully many cohort opportunities.

Thank you for all your prayers and support! As we head toward our one-year anniversary celebration, held October 1st here at St. Bakhita House, we certainly hold all of you in prayer. The Mustard seed is planted!

God’s peace,

Anne

All is grace
