Greetings, friends!
Imagine my surprise that shredded vegetables can go into a bread concoction and it just might taste delicious! What a joy and a gift it has been to make zucchini bread with our community. And if that vegetable-based element of surprise is not enough, we actually grew this featured ingredient with our own hands. God bless the sun, the rain, and the soil—St. Bakhita Catholic Worker House is a “Garden-to-Table” establishment!!
To witness the surprise of someone biting into their first piece of zucchini bread is a sight to behold. However, it was the conversation that naturally flowed as we worked side-by-side, engaging in this culinary “experiment”, that stirred more than just the batter. There is no price that can be put on an encounter rooted in such deep, raw levels of trust and honesty. It is nourishment on a myriad of levels for all involved. And our beautiful raised beds have also produced a plethora of tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, lettuce, kale, and the list goes on. It has become abundantly clear why farms and gardens are such an important part of the Catholic Worker way of life. Getting close to the Earth helps us to realize and value our participatory role in creation.
We are very grateful for all your prayers and support that make these seemingly small moments magical, sacred, and transformative. We never forget that these snapshots in time are all gifts received. The women we serve are consistently aware of this. Thy bounty flows from all of creation. That includes you!
