I remember when I was quite young, and Mother’s Day was fast approaching, the folly of youth inspired me to ask, “Hey Mom, when is Kids’ Day?” Well, you can imagine how well that was received. It was at that moment that I learned quite emphatically that “Kids’ Day” is every day. The thought of that interaction never ceases to make me smile. Recently, this memory was stirred when I began to contemplate Giving Tuesday. Just like kids and moms across the world are loved more than one day a year, so do many people give more than once a year. To our supporters here at St. Bakhita Catholic Worker House, we appreciate your ongoing generosity so very, very much!
I have come to believe, though, that these little nudges to remember are good for us. This makes sense with regard to Giving Tuesday. Historically, this special day was created to gently remind us during the holiday season what active gratitude looks like. Whether we offer a prayer, give of our time, or give of our treasure, we are living in the spirt of this yearly reminder.
Sharing in our recent Thanksgiving feast really illustrated the beauty of giving. Our gorgeous dining room table was topped with our china and filled with delicious food. The table, china, and food all were donated generously just this year. It is this generosity that allows us to anticipate with hope a wonderful Advent and Christmas journey.
Many good things are happening here in our St. Bakhita community, and we hope you consider us a worthy recipient of your incredible generosity. Day by day, the women at St. Bakhita House are making their way to health and happiness. Two women have been here for a year and a half, and another woman has been here close to a year. The newest community members are settling in well, and a lot of hope is in the air. Pope Benedict referred to St. Bakhita as a great example of hope. Coincidence? Well, it is our hope that, on this Giving Tuesday, you continue to see us as a worthy recipient of your generosity. May we all answer those nudges whenever we feel them!
Blessings, peace, and gratitude,
Anne
